WAX FAQ

Does Waxing Hurt?

I never say anything is painless because everyone is different. But what I will say is depending on the area being waxed, the coarseness of the hair and your sensitivity level, the pain associated with waxing is relatively mild and lasts a few seconds for most clients. Painful waxing experiences typically come from improper application, too much wax applied to a large section at once, and improper removal of the wax resulting in tugging and pulling of the hair, bruising or lifting of the skin. Yikes! As an experienced waxer of 6 years, I remove the wax strip in one smooth motion and then apply pressure to the area which calms the skin while being waxed. I use hard wax so I don't have to use a strip at all and also use smaller strips per section, pulling in a parallel motion to the skin's surface thus resulting in the hair being lifted out of the pore and leaving the skin in place. A waxer should NEVER lift up on the wax strip when removing. This is what causes the most damage and pain to the skin.
Generally, most clients that have never waxed are most sensitive during Brazilians and lip waxes. That is where there are the most nerve endings. I also have some numbing cream recommendations that can be purchased at the drugstore. I always let my more apprehensive clients know about it before their wax appointment.

How Long Does It Last?

Waxing lasts between 3-4 weeks. I recommend having an appointment once a month (every 4 weeks) to maintain smooth results.

Can I Get Waxed?

If any of these apply to you or you fall within any of the following categories, you would not make a good candidate for waxing (also known as contraindications):

-Use of prescription-strength exfoliating (or acne) products (i.e. Retin-A, Accutane, Tazorac, Differin Gel, Tretinoin, etc). Please stop the use of topical products Retin-A at least 10 days PRIOR to your waxing service (although it is preferred you not have used the product in at least 3 months). Accutane or other ingest-able exfoliating medications require 6 months-1 year of a break between your last dose and your waxing service. These products thin the skin and thus it is HIGHLY LIKELY you will lift the skin and then scab if the wax is applied and you have not informed me of your medication use ahead of time.

-Topical or oral antibiotic use, mild exfoliating products (AHAs or BHAs), and Retinols can all cause the skin to thin thus making you vulnerable to lifting and sensitivity. PLEASE disclose any use of these products to me prior to appointment.

-Recent chemical peel or microdermabrasion of any kind. Please allow 7 days between a mild chemical peel (glycolic, lactic, etc.) that has occurred or 7 days after your peeling has stopped for mid-level to deep penetrating peels (TCA, Jessner, Salicylic, etc).

-Recent sunburn or prolonged exposure to the sun/tanning bed. Please allow for 7 days once the redness and peeling have stopped if your burn was severe.

-Visible skin trauma including but not limited to: burns, scabs, open wounds, infections, lesions, sores, dry or scaly and flaking skin, herpes outbreak, moles or raised skin, post-surgical scarring less than 6 months old or severe acne. Please allow the skin to heal and clear before booking a waxing service.

-Diabetics or those undergoing cancer treatment. These two conditions often affect your body's ability to heal from any damage or trauma and thus should be avoided.

Can I wax on my Cycle or While Pregnant?

Yes, you can wax on your menstrual cycle. I do ask that you're not bleeding heavily and also wearing a tampon during your appointment. You can also wax while pregnant as long as you're able to lay in the position needed for the service you're getting unless otherwise stated by your physician. Please know that the skin is a lot more sensitive during menstruation and pregnancy so that is something to keep in mind. Other than that it is perfectly ok to wax during menstruation or while pregnant.

Do You Use Hard or Soft Wax?

Here at Beauty and Lola Studio, I use a European Hard Wax for full body waxing. It is not only relatively painless but it creates its own strip thus eliminating the need for a paper strip on top. It also helps with a more precise application to the area resulting in an overall better wax.

What are the age requirements?

You must be 18 or older for Brazilian waxing services. Facial and body waxing under 18 is allowed with parental consent (excluding bikini and Brazilian services). I will require them to fill out a consent form before services are performed.

How Long Should My Hair Be?

Your hair should be AT LEAST 1/4 inch or the length of an uncooked grain of jasmine rice. It can be longer but I recommend you wait at least 1-2 weeks (9-14 days) after shaving before getting a wax to ensure the best results.
